Tatiana Istomina

Tatiana Istomina is an artist working with painting, sculpture, film and text. The central questions in her practice are the conditions of knowledge and the variable notions of truth. How do we know what we know? How do we know what we know is true? Is there one truth? Who owns it? Istomina’s recent project “Flight Mechanics” concerns the long-established binary of a mechanism and a living organism. Advances in science, technology and social conditioning are blurring the borders between organic and mechanical structures, living tissue and hardware, human consciousness and programmable reflexes. Istomina’s project explores both the utopian and dystopian consequences of the mechanism/organism integration: its potential to transform sentient beings into senseless automatons and at the same time, to free them from their biological limitations, giving wingless creatures the ability to fly.
