Oscar Hugal

Oscar Hugal (*1986 in Antwerp) lives and works in Antwerp.

The practice of Oscar Hugal is indirectly but strongly influenced by conceptual art and
institutional critique. His recent drawings and objects reflect on the act of production and
“making work work”. He allows his artistic process to be determined by systematic yet
arbitrary procedures he devices to determine when and how his ideas are being
translated into new work. His practice can be read as the reconstruction of a disrupted
narrative that only the artist can put together.

Hugal has exhibited, among others, at the 27th Brno Biennial, Stadtgalerie in Bern,
Voorkamer in Lier, Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, Stiftung Insel Hombroich in Neuss,
De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam and Extra City in Antwerp. He has been involved in
curatorial projects such as Please Use the Other Door: Origin + Source and Openbaar
Museum in Antwerp.
